RWC hosts foreign language teachers

On Saturday, October 14, the RWC Foreign Languages Department sponsored a workshop here for over 80 foreign language teachers from the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area.
Dr. Sharon Watts, an adjunct professor from Creighton University and former Foreign Language/English as a Second Language Supervisor of the Omaha Public Schools, Omaha, Nebraska, conducted the workshop.
The workshop, titled “Planting Seeds of Success in the Foreign Language Learner,” emphasized the need for students to learn a foreign language. According to Dr. Watts, our economy is finding out day by day the importance of knowing a second language in today’s world.
Dr. Watts also discussed the Five Cs of the National Foreign Language Standards (communication, communities, comparisons, culture, and connections). She looked at concepts of second language acquisition, and she talked about the different strategies to help all students learn.
“The workshop was a valuable way to keep foreign language teachers up-to-date on current professional standards and practices,” said Professor Judith Baughin, Chair of the RWC Foreign Languages Department.
