Students to nominate faculty for UC awards

The nomination process has begun for the 2001 A.B. (Dolly) Cohen and the George B. Barbour Awards for UC faculty. The A.B. (Dolly) Cohen Award is given to a faculty member who is an excellent teacher. A Cohen Award winner is committed to teaching and regards it as a primary function of the University. He or she teaches a variety of courses successfully and with creativity. In addition, he or she demonstrates sensitivity and respect toward a diversity of options, experiences, and individual differences and multicultural needs of students. A Cohen Award winner stimulates independent work in students and establishes a classroom atmosphere which fosters self-confidence and mutual respect.

The George B.Barbour Award is given to a faculty member who has a history of involvement with students and with student groups and activities. A Barbour Award winner demonstrates genuine concern about the students’ current and long-range development, as well as sensitivity to individual differences and multicultural needs. He or she demonstrates a knowledge of information related to advising, course requirements and registration, and acts as a mentor for students, even after they graduate. This award winner earns the respect and trust of students, and is concerned with them as individuals.

Students and/or alumni are eligible to nominate a faculty member for either award. All nominations must be submitted in writing and must designate for which award they are nominating the faculty member, as well as include a signature and date from the nominating party. Students and/or alumni wishing to nominate a faculty member for either award should write a short letter (two or three sentences) and drop it in the nominations box near Ray’s Cafe. The box will be in place by Monday, February 5, 2001 and will be removed on Friday, February 16, 2001. Nomination forms will be placed near the box to help simplify the nomination process. All nominations collected will be forwarded directly to the Chair of the Barbour-Cohen Awards Committee.

In lieu of the box, students or alumni may submit nominations directly to the Chair of the 2001 Barbour-Cohen Awards Committe, Ralph Meyer, Professor of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences. The final deadline for all nominations is Monday, February 19, 2001.
