Course to teach advanced life-saving skills

This is the second of three descriptions of courses offered by the Center for Prehospital Education. This one is on the Emergency Medical Technician Basic level (EMT-B) certification course during Spring Quarter. This course is accredited by the Ohio Department of Public Safety and is recognized by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. EMTs are professionals who provide life-saving emergency medical care to the sick and injured.

Students will be taught the following skills:
* how to perform patient assessment
* airway maintenance
* administration of oxygen
* cardiac resuscitation
* bleeding control
* treatment of shock
* immobilization of fractures
* bandaging of injured limbs

Students will learn skills from hands-on-training taught by qualified EMS instructors. This class runs from March 27 to July 19, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Students will also have the opportunity to qualify for the National Registry exam for the EMT-B level. This certification will allow students to operate as EMT-Bs in any National Registry state. This course is good for six credit hours towards any degree.

To be admitted, students must satisfy the following:
* Be minimum of 18 years of age.
* Have at least a high school diploma or GED.
* Have a current driver’s license.
* Provide proof of personal health insurance.
* Provide documentation or obtain the required immunizations shots.
* Not be currently charged or on parole for a felony.
