Job market becomes “tale of horror

“Ask most any graduate of the college class of 2001 about the job market, and you’ll hear a tale of horror” (U.S. News & World Report, Nov 5, 2001). Those employers who do expect to cut back on the hiring of college graduates cite the economic slowdown as their primary reason. Others say they are not experiencing the same level of turnover and therefore do not have the same number of “replacement” slots to fill.

According to a survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), employers expect to hire 19.7 percent fewer new college graduates in 2001-02 than they did in 2000-01.

NACE found that the most hiring strength could be seen in the government/non-profit sector, while manufacturers expect the steepest cuts in college hiring. The South is showing, if not strength, then the least weakness, while employers in the West expect the biggest drop in college hiring.
