Although the National Asian New Year (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese) falls in February this year, RWC recognized this occasion on Wednesday, January 16. Over lunchtime, the lobby of Muntz Hall came alive with a celebration of distinctive Chinese cultural music as well as Asian cuisine. Hu Mei, Chinese instrumental artist and member of the Greater Cincinnati Chinese Music Society, performed traditional classical Chinese music with gusto in addition to executing Chinese folk songs on the yueqin or “Moon Guitar.”
Hu Mei and her husband, Mr. Xie, have special visas to perform in the U.S. They began studying traditional Chinese cultural instruments around age 12. Hu Mei is an widely accomplished instrumentalist and vocalist who has performed with the Beijing Opera in Peking.
