The college is under renovation, which you as a student have most likely already been subjected to. So what is the point of the renovations and why are you being forced to search for the new locations of offices and stand in outrageous lines? The answer is “For your own good.”The renovation of the college is broken into two phases, with Phase One already completed. Phase One was the remodeling of the Library and the creation of the new labs in Muntz Hall’s West Wing.
Phase Two will encompass other parts of Muntz Hall and the Flory Center. The first of the Phase Two renovation actually began last quarter, with the move of Associate Dean Tim Quinnan down the hall into Muntz 151. Mr. Quinnan is the Associate Dean of Student Services as well as the head of the renovation committee. With the help of Gene Kramer, the Director of RWC Facilities Management, Mr. Quinnan has begun what he has described will bring the college up to date both visually and technologically.
For the beginning of phase one, a mini one-stop center has been configured on the second floor of Muntz Hall in rooms 210 and 211. Financial Aid, Registration, and the Business Office are all temporarily located in this rather cramped area, which has led to big lines and slower computers at the stations.
Next door to the one-stop center are the advisors, Security, and other key offices, such as Multi-Cultural Student Affairs. Student Life and the Lounge area have moved to the Flory Center, joining the Daycare Center. The Flory Center now also hosts offices for the Activist, Student Activities Committee, and other student organizations.
When the renovation is all complete, a new mall style bookstore with an all glass front will be located where the Registration and Business office were located. On the other side of the hall will be Multi-Cultural Student Affairs, Dr. Quinnan’s new office, and adjunct faculty offices.
This area will also have a glass front to make the hall more appealing to students and guests.
The old location of the Bookstore will be a new, larger, one-stop Registration and Business Office. The idea of this one-stop, which will also have a glass front for a more inviting environment, will be so students won’t be sent to various locations around the school, as in the past.
Every service for students, from placement tests, registrations, advising and so on will all be at their fingertips. The new location will be state of the art and extremely efficient, according to Dr. Quinnan. The other office that will get a face-lift will be the Dean’s office, which now plays host to Associate Dean Don O’Meara and Dean Barbara Bardes. Dean Bardes will have an expanded office with conference abilities and the receptionist area will be improved.
The school hopes to have the renovation completed entirely by January of 2003. Until then students will have to live with the inconvenience.
