Baby Grands perform at RWC

On Saturday February 23, RWC hosted an a cappella group, The Baby Grands. The concert took place in Muntz Hall as part of the ’01-’02 concert season. The group was formed in 1997 at the Cincinnati School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), and out of the eleven current members four are from that original group. The group has recorded four CDs and received awards from contests in San Francisco and Virginia Beach. They were also selected for the “Best of H.S. A Cappella,” an annual CD and have given performances at the Aronoff and Taft Theater. With an international tour coming up, the group still says their number one accomplishment is “Making such wonderful music.”

At the end of the two-hour long concert, each of the members said good-bye to the crowd in their own special way. It was easy to see that they love to sing with each other.

Sara Cluggish a sophomore at SCPA said this as her good-bye: “It’s so wonderful to make music with the people that I love.”

At the concert they performed songs like “Danny Boy,” “Paperback Writer,” “Under the Boardwalk,” and “Lilacs and Rain.” The crowd of mostly senior citizens sat in full attention. The only instrument used was a guitar for a solo during a Jewel song.

Most of the members are moving on to higher education, and the group will disband at the end of this school year with the “baby” Baby Grands ready to take their place.

The group told me that they would love to become professional, but they didn’t know if that would ever happen.
