New special topics classes in Behavioral Sciences

This spring the RWC Behavioral Sciences Department will be offering a new course focusing on race and ethnicity. The class will familiarize students with the key issues of race and ethnicity. Topics from a variety of areas, such as issues of slavery and those of racial profiling, will be covered. Students should leave the course with a better understanding of prejudice and discrimination.

Modern issues such as media portrayal of race, profiling, and affirmative action will be covered also.

The course will count as an upper-level elective for many programs. Day and evening times will be offered for those interested.

It’s also not too early to start thinking about summer classes. The Behavioral Sciences Department will be offering a new special Topics in Psychology course called Management Principles for Psychological Well-Being.

This five-week long course will help students to create a meaningful change in their lives. The focus is on becoming an effective manager of life.

The course will use Dr. Phil McGraw’s book. Dr. Phil is seen on the “Oprah” show every Tuesday. The class offers advice on internal control, labeling emotions, theories of motivation, and more. The grade students receive will be based on reading checks, class discussion, and the completion of a project plan for a life change.

The class begins June 17 with Dr. Robin Lightner, who says that the tools gained from this class can be used throughout life.
