Student Writing Contest deadline April 26

The Fifth Annual Student Writing Contest is now accepting entries from any students taking preparatory or first-year English Composition at the University of Cincinnati during the 2001-2002 academic year.Cash awards of $100 for first prize, $75 for second prize, $50 for third prize, as well as UC Bookstore gift certificates for earning honorable mention, may be given in each of the following categories:

* Essays written in response to texts
* Essays written about or using personal experience
* Researched essays
* Open category essays

A grand prize of $200 may be awarded to an exemplary essay from any of the above categories.

Special Category, called Just Community, will provide a $500 Scholarship to the best essay that addresses the concept of “Just Community” at the University of Cincinnati and its surrounding community. The essay should demonstrate familiarity with UC’s Just Community Readings and notions of community building.

All winners and their composition instructors will be recognized at an awards reception in late May of 2002.

Selected winning essays will be published in Bravo!: An Anthology of Award-Winning Student Writing.

Selected Essays from the Just Community category will be submitted for possible inclusion in next year’s Just Community Readings.

Application forms are available in the Writing Center and from English Composition instructors. Submissions, which are due by April 26, may be given to students’ English Composition instructor or to Professor Marlene Miner, Room 370, Muntz Hall.
