If you are in a four-year program or planning on transferring to a four-year program, you need many credit-hours of humanities and social sciences. The University has implemented these requirements to broaden the student’s learning experience. Most of these courses either directly or indirectly focus on the topic of “people” in general. All of the behavioral sciences, such as psychology and sociology, English, history, and foreign languages fall into either social sciences or humanities. Even taking the student newspaper workshop will earn you a few credit hours in humanities.
It’s a good thing there is a wide variety of courses to choose from in order to fulfill these requirements, since all four-year students need to have a great deal of these courses. Students in two-year programs do not need to meet these requirements.
What exactly do I need? In order to graduate, all four-year students need a total of twenty-four credit hours in humanities and social sciences. That means the total number of humanities credits plus the total number of social science credits must equal at least twenty-four. However, each student must have a minimum of nine credits of social sciences and nine credits of humanities. The remaining six credits can be in either of those fields, depending on the student’s personal preferences. Finally, there must be at least six credits of upper level courses. These courses can be in either humanities or social sciences or both.
The University decides which courses are considered upper level and which courses land in the categories of either humanities or social sciences. For a list of these courses go to the Registration Office.
