Office provides caring environment for students with disabilities

Much as the name implies, the Disability Services Office (DSO) at RWC offers assistance to students with disabilities. The office, staffed only by Director John Kraimer and 2002 winner of the RWC Distinguished Staff Award, Learning Disabilities Specialist Mary Lou Ellison, supplements its manpower by recruiting student volunteers for things like note-taking, reading, and interpreting for others with special needs. In addition to those services listed above, other accommodations through DSO include books-on-tape, quiet testing area or extended testing time, and others. This Fall, the office became an official site for students with disabilities to register to vote.

“Disability Services offers a caring, friendly environment where students with any type of disability can receive assistance,” says Kraimer. Students wishing to visit Disability Services will find the office, along with a number of other assistance areas, like the Reading, Math, Writing, and College Study Skills labs, along the back wall of the Computer Concourse of Muntz Hall.

Although the primary function of DSO is assisting students, it will provide information and referral services to anyone with disability related issues. Students who are in need of help or know of someone who could benefit from these services should contact the office directly at 792-8625 or via email at john.kraimer.
