2003 study abroad program no myth

For those students looking for a way both to take summer classes and to enjoy a vacation, the RWC study abroad program offers the perfect solution. This time the students will be visiting both England and Ireland, June 17-July 13. The trip will include not only studies at Harlaxton College in England, but also classroom trips that will broaden the students’ world views while reaffirming class studies. Two new courses to be offered this year will be taught by RWC professors. “The Mythology of Ireland,” taught by English Professor Ruth Benander, will explore the subjects of the hero in Irish myth. The class will also develop an understanding of the cultural implications of the myth through the curriculum. This course also offers a section that will highlight the cycle of Robin Hood while also actually visiting Sherwood Forest and the city of Nottingham.

Another class, entitled “The Math of Myth,” will be taught by Math Professor Eugene Kramer. It will approach the topic of both history and myth from a mathematical prospective, beginning with the history of numbers, astronomy, and the way ancient cultures used math. Further studies will involve the art of ancient warfare and the application of several Celtic texts.

Both of these courses are three credit hours.
