Biology Department hires two adjuncts

Previous part-time adjuncts Carolyn J. McCormick and Mark R. M. Otten are the RWC Biology Department’s two new faculty, hired as “represented adjuncts.” The job category of represented adjunct was just added in the Biology Department, according to Chair William Garnett. Represented adjuncts are full-time teaching faculty who are not eligible for tenure, a measure which many faculty believe serves to protect faculty against political/social pressures to alter the curriculum to fit a certain view. Both McCormick and Otten will receive full benefits and are under contract, but are not expected to become involved in faculty governance at the college or university levels.

Carolyn has a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science degree, both from Saint Louis University. She has taught in both secondary schools in Kentucky and colleges in Ohio, Oklahoma, and Texas. She obtained her secondary education certification while serving as a learning laboratory specialist.

Mark received an Associate degree in science in Pre-Forestry and Wildlife Management from RWC in 1983 and was recognized with a Distinguished Alumni Award from the college in 1998. After graduating from RWC, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resources from Ohio State University before attending Michigan State University to earn a Master of Science in Fisheries and Wildlife.
