The good and the bad in the new Bookstore

As everyone can see there is a lot of construction going on here at RWC. As part of this construction, the Bookstore has changed locations. It is now located where the Registration Office used to be. Along with the new location, the Bookstore has acquired a new layout: a layout that has received many compliments from students. There do, however, seem to be some problems with the new layout. First, every once in a while the line extends past the bounds of the store and into the hallway. In addition to this that same line splits the store in half, creating an obstacle for customers to maneuver through. Also there is no longer a bag drop off site. But students carrying their bags through the store may increase the chance of theft, thus increasing the cost of product, something nobody wants to happen.

Finally all of this could have been a non-issue if there was a deputy on duty at all times. But this is not the case.

Jon Schaffer, the Manager of the Bookstore admitted that the line does reach the depths of the hall at times. And he acknowledged that it should not. He also stated that not since the first week, the busiest time for the bookstore, has this happened.

Also during that week, there was a deputy on duty from open to close, Schaffer said.

As far as the concern about the line splitting the store in the middle, he says, “The line through the center of the store is not ideal, but it seemed to work reasonably well. The line seemed orderly and the back-to-school rush went very smoothly.”

Concerning the lack of a bag drop off, Schaffer said, “Customers are allowed to bring bags into the store because we now have a digital camera system. The camera system allows bookstore employees to watch for shoplifters, and each camera records to a CD. These cameras are also monitored at the Main campus bookstore. In addition, the new store layout did not permit space for a bookdrop fixture.
