Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society for Two-Year CollegeStudents. The RWC chapter, called the Upsilon Psi chapter, was established several years ago.
The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize and encourage scholarship among associate degree students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa provides, among other things, opportunities for the development of leadership and service.
One way Phi Theta Kappa does this is its International Service Program. The 2002-04 International Service Program is entitled “Conquering Cancer: A Prevention and Awareness Program with the American Cancer Society.”
On November 21, the American Cancer Society marked the 26th Annual Great American Smokeout. The Great American Smokeout spotlights the dangers of smoking and challenges people to stop using tobacco. The one-day event encourages smokers to quit for a lifetime by starting with just one day.
Phi Theta Kappa’s International Officers challenged all its chapters to participate in this year’s event. The Upsilon Psi chapter accepted this challenge and went on to challenge all of RWC to join them. Their flyers were posted around campus.
The Upsilon Psi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa encourages everyone–smokers and non-smokers–to do a little reading on the effects of smoking. Tobacco use reportedly accounted for an estimated 430,700 premature deaths each year from 1990 to 1994 and more than $53 billion in direct medical costs in 1993.
If you accepted PTK’s challenge and participated in the Smokeout, PTK wants to hear about it. Were you able to go the whole day without smoking? Were you able to go longer without smoking? Even if you don’t smoke, did you find some way to participate in the event? EMail PTK at PTKUpsilonPsi@yahoo.com and tell them all about your experience in participating in this event.
