Tips to stay safe this Holiday Season

There have been two thefts at RWC this autumn quarter, one from an unlocked office and one of an item left in plain sight in a vehicle. Both are being investigated. UC Police and Public Safety is attempting to educate everyone in how to avoid being a victim of a crime. With the holidays just around the corner, UC Police are providing crime prevention brochures with tips to be used at school and at home to make your holiday safer.

The tips include the following:

*Do not bring your valuables to campus if possible.
*Keep cash and other valuables out of sight.
*Remember to secure your office when you leave the area.
*If you do not carry your belongings with you, lock them out of sight.
*Do not leave your books unattended. Also, mark them so they can be identified if ever lost or stolen.
*Walk in well-lit areas, preferably not alone.
*Remember that the Security department is available for escorts to your vehicle during the evening hours.
*Know the location of the help phones or the nearest available phones.
(Also, there are areas of rescue containing phones in many of the stairwells. They ring into Police Dispatch.)
*Report any suspicious activity to the police by calling 911 or 745-5707 or 556-1111.

The weather will be changing and everyone needs to remember that the speed limit on campus is 15 mph. Use caution when driving through the parking lots to avoid accidents. The parking lots are often full of students, their children, faculty and staff. Give consideration to pedestrians walking through the lots.

The UC Police office is located in Room 134 Muntz Hall. Campus police are also in charge of lost and found and have an inscriber on hand to mark belongings, if needed. There are also first aid supplies on hand when needed.
