Students have the opportunity to travel to the Technische Universitaet (TU) Ilmenau in Germany for a three-week study abroad program this summer with Debbie Page, RWC Assistant Professor of German. The university is in a small town at the edge of the Thuringian Mountains in the state of Thuringia, a few hours to the east of Frankfurt. Participants will take two courses while in Ilmenau: Contemporary German Culture and Civilization (3 cr.) and the TU’s Sommerkurs, for which no tuition is charged, thanks to the exchange agreement between the two universities.
There will be language classes during the mornings, with cultural lectures, presentations and excursions in the afternoons and on the weekends, with time scheduled for free time activities such as hiking, sports or the on-campus student nightclub.
Excursions may include Eisenach (home of Martin Luther and Johann Sebastian Bach), the state capital of Erfurt, and Weimar, with a side trip to the Buchenwald concentration camp for those interested. The excursions are included in the total cost, which is approximately $2500. Students will have the opportunity to apply for an individual student grant for study abroad from the Institute for Global Studies and Affairs.
If you are interested, and have completed one year of college German or the equivalent, you can get additional information and the application materials from Debbie Page by stopping by her office (Muntz 323), phoning her at 745-5679, or requesting them by email at deborah.page@uc.edu. The deadline for submitting the application with a $100 deposit is March 1, 2003.
