Iranian professor speaks at RWC

Dr. Azar Nafisi, author of “Teaching Lolita in Tehran,” spoke to approximately 100 people Friday, April 4, in the Muntz Auditorium at an event sponsored by RWC, the UC College of Education, and the Center for Women’s Studies.Dr. Nafisi told the audience of her struggles as a university professor of literature in Iran, and spoke specifically of the necessity of having to meet secretly in her home with her students so that they could freely discuss important works of Western literature.

There were a number of young Iranians in the audience, and one highlight of the evening was the surprise reunion of Nafisi with one of her former students from Tehran who now lives in Cincinnati.

Special thanks to Dean Barbara Bardes, Education Dean Lawrence Johnson, Dr. Anne Runyan of the Center for Women’s Studies, the staffs of RWC’s College Relations, Media Services, and Maintainance departments, and the World Affairs Council of Greater Cincinnati, who helped make this program a success.

For those interested, Dr. Nafari’s book is currently available in UC Bookstores.
