“Bruce Almighty” is a film that has critics both raving and complaining. There is no in-between on this one. You will either find yourself loving this film, or you will find that you are cursing yourself for having wasted your time. Either way you feel about the movie, you will be contributing to the revenue of the film, which is currently leading the box office by leaps and bounds.Jim Carey steps up to the big screen again to take on the role of playing Bruce Nolan. Bruce works at a local TV station trying desperately to get recognized and land the job of an anchor for Buffalo’s Channel 7 Eyewitness News. After countless failures in his professional career, Bruce reaches his final straw during a horrifying day where he is beaten up by thugs, loses his job, and crashes his car.
These unfortunate and, at times, funny events lead to Bruce’s absolutely losing it and launching a tirade on God that can only be described as ballsy. For the first time in his life, God is actually listening to Bruce Nolan and decides that he will show him that his job is not quite as easy as it appears. The man upstairs turns out to be none other than Morgan Freeman, and he bestows all of his worldly powers on to Bruce for the duration of God’s much needed vacation.
If you have not seen the previews yet for this film, try to stay away from the television because a large majority of the funniest scenes are shown in the previews. Bruce doesn’t decide to use his new powers for the benefit of world civilization or anything like that; instead he decides to be selfish. Included in such acts are the growth of his girlfriend Jennifer Aniston’s breasts, and the potty training of his Dalmatian, so that the dog can now read the newspaper on the john.
By the end of the film, Bruce has found out that he may not make a very good God, but the lessons he has learned during his experience will help to make him a better TV anchor. Bruce finds that although he has had all of these wonderful powers, none of the choices he made had any long term effects. They were all just temporary solutions to his problems and wants.
For those of you who like to see Jim Carey playing the clown, he is back in his comedic form, but do not expect the outrageous hilarity that has been there in some of his superb films. And if for nothing else, the trip to the theatre is almost worth it just to see Aniston’s breasts grow a few sizes right before your eyes.
