Sylvia Thompson gets Diversity is Beautiful Award

On Wednesday, May 28, the RWC Diversity Is Beautiful Award was presented to Mrs. Sylvia Thompson, Adjunct Professor of English. Dr. Mitchel Livingston, UC Vice President of Student Affairs and Services, along with the D.I.B.A. committee, presented the award to Mrs. Thompson in a surprise ceremony in the RWC Writing Lab. Mrs. Thompson was very surprised about the beautiful engraved glass award. It had an inscription on one side and a picture frame on the other. Mrs. Thompson, who teaches Prep Reading and Writing English courses, was nominated by one of her students for her caring, sensitive nature, and her sincere concern for the needs of all students. One of students said, “Mrs. Thompson is very sensitive to the needs of all her students. I’m from Russia and English is not my native language. She is patient and helps me a lot….She helps me to develop as a whole person–all parts of my life.”

The Diversity Is Beautiful Award is awarded to faculty, staff, or an administrator who has exhibited one or more of the following:

Shown an awareness for diversity
Exhibited a sensitivity to people of various cultures
Helped student growth in the knowledge of diversity
Recognized preparation for diversity in the workplace
Helped a student personally in the area of diversity

The candidate must be nominated by a student. The award is sponsored by the Multicultural Affairs Office.
