One of the greatest gifts people can give is their time, and I challenge you to simply give an hour a week, a morning a month or more in volunteering. If you do, you will find the rewards are greater than your time spent. At this time of year, the giving spirit surfaces, and many make a difference in soup kitchens and by collecting toys for children. While these are noble and necessary causes, please consider making your volunteering time a year-long and hopefully life-long effort.
Choosing a worthy cause is easy. Usually it is one that tugs at your heart, one that you have a personal connection to or includes an endeavor you find interesting.
I personally started volunteering at the American Cancer Society after my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. I know that making copies, putting stickers on envelopes, and generally doing whatever small task is asked of me will not cure cancer, but I save the organization money, allowing more funds to go towards vital research that may one day tip the balance towards greater success.
Many years ago when my daughter was a baby, I needed some time alone, so I volunteered at a local nursing home calling bingo. This became one of the most enjoyable times I have ever had in my life, and the residents were a joy. Even the cantankerous lady who challenged her winnings of 25 cents each week had me laughing. I made a difference in their lives, and they made a difference in mine; I felt needed.
So whatever your passion, please consider giving a little of yourself this year and into the next. You will find a treasure you never knew existed.
