RWC English Professor Cynthia Crane has recently been awarded a faculty research grant from the University Research Council (URC). Prof. Crane will be using the grant of $4025 to continue work on a follow-up book to her first book, “Divided Lives,” entitled “The Myriad Faces of Addiction and Healing.” Prof. Crane said she became drawn to her research topic “initially because of various people I knew who had overcome addictions and also because often the literature that I teach centers around a character moving out of an obsession or addiction and into a new life.”
Prof. Crane has already completed ten interviews, most of which are from the Cincinnati area, and is periodically assisted by RWC undergraduate Roz Watts in transcribing the tapes. Her research visits have included a variety of treatment centers, and Prof. Crane has had special permission and consent by the participants to view support groups and relapse groups.
Prof. Crane adds that this project and her first book “are contiguous in that I’m looking at similar issues: identity, overcoming trauma and creating a new self.
