Grant available to disadvantaged Nursing students

The Nursing Program at RWC is currently seeking applicants for the Grant for Academic Initiative in Nursing (GAIN) as part of a Workforce Diversity grant from the Department of Health and Human Services. There are several objectives of the grant, including increasing access for minority and financially disadvantaged students and increasing cultural competency.Applications for GAIN are currently being accepted for students wanting to join the nursing program next fall. To obtain an application call the RWC Nursing Program at 745-5665 or visit the RWC web site, www.rwc.uc.edu. The process involves being interviewed by a committee. With slots still available, the deadline has been extended to March 15.

RWC is currently in the second year of the grant with 43 students in the program. GAIN provides funds encouraging minority or economically disadvantaged students to enter or remain in college through mentoring and tutoring programs as well as monthly stipends and group counseling.

GAIN totals $900,000 over three years, and to assist students further, The Health Alliance and Mercy Regional Health Partners have agreed to cover the cost of the textbooks in support of the grant, which totals an approximate additional $20,000.
