First Book UC-RWC has kicked off Our Heroes Read on March 2 to help launch the National Education Association’s (NEA) “Read Across America.” Additionally, March 2 is Dr. Seuss’s birthday. To emphasize the importance of reading to success in life, educators from kindergarten through college will personally autograph over 200 children’s books on March 2-4, to be distributed to children later in the month at Kenwood Mall.
These educators will also complete a book-shaped certificate that states, “_________________ reads!”, and add their position. For example, Helen Kegler, UC-RWC Multi Cultural Affairs Director, reads! These forms will be displayed on an Our Heroes Read board.
On Saturday, March 19, the autographed books will be distributed to children, and the Our Heroes Read board will be displayed at the Kenwood Mall.
Some of these successful educators/heroes will be invited to read to children during the Our Heroes Read hour. The children who receive the books (or preschoolers and their parents) will be encouraged to begin reading at the mall on a carpeted area.
Those who begin reading on the spot will be given a book-shaped form that states, “___________ reads and wants to become ___________.” These forms will be placed on our Future Heroes board.
