I have decided to re-title the “My World” soap box to “Our World” in order to share some information with the RWC community regarding a cause in need of attention.As Cincinnati opened the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and African American History Month brings tribute and reverence to those who have endured and overcome the injustices of slavery, some might consider the basic concept as something quite distant from our lives today. It may be something read about in history books or seen as topics of documentaries. Sadly this isn’t the reality. Today, people all over the world are forced into various forms of slavery more than any other time in history.
I want to share some information in hopes that readers might, at the very least, spread the word about what is happening in our own country as well as abroad to innocent women and children. I have become involved with the Friends of Maiti Nepal and have created a website in order to increase awareness of human trafficking and the abuse of women, children, and men.
I realize it is easy to get wrapped up in schedules and personal lives, sometimes allowing our daily focus to become narrow and self preserving, but I do not believe this means people do not care. It simply means that sometimes people need an invitation to learn.
As we reconsider how fortunate we are to have the ability to shape our present and future, we should also realize our duty as members of the world community to do something, anything, to help those who are denied a voice, a life, a future.
