For students and faculty planning a trip this Spring Break, Officer Barbara Henson of RWC’s Security Department offers this advice for a safe experience as you travel.BEFORE YOU LEAVE
Stop mail and newspaper.
Leave blinds or shades normal.
Put two lights and a radio on a timer.
Have a friend or neighbor maintain your property.
Make sure your doors and windows are locked.
Check with your local police agency if they do “vacation checks.”
PACKING YOUR BAGS
Make a record of your documents and credit cards.
Only carry essential credit cards and clean out your wallet before you go.
Don’t carry large amounts of cash (use traveler’s checks and credit cards when possible).
TRAVELING
Plan your route.
Have your car serviced prior to leaving.
Exit at well lit areas.
Keep valuables and road maps out of sight (don’t advertise that you are a tourist).
Keep your vehicle locked at all times when you stop.
If possible carry a cell phone.
AT YOUR HOTEL
Don’t leave luggage unattended.
Park in well lit areas.
Do not leave valuables in your room (use a safe deposit box).
Always carry cash, credit cards and keys with you.
Do not answer the door if you do not know who it is (verify employees through the front desk.
Check your belongings daily.
AT YOUR VACATION AREA
Don’t display expensive jewelry or cameras.
Carry your purse close to you.
Be aware of your surroundings.
Use sight seeing companies recommended by your hotel.
Stay with your party or have a meeting place set up in case you get separated.
