Video games: Hits and misses among March releases

Oddly enough, a decent amount of video games are scheduled for release throughout March. Unlike the bold titles “Grand Theft Auto” or “Halo,” most of these new games have a smaller fan base. Consequently, they didn’t seem to make it in time for Christmas. Let’s preview the upcoming hits and misses.Hit: “TimeSplitters: Future Perfect” for the PlayStation 2 or Gamecube, available March 8.

I must admit, as a huge fan of this series, I have been waiting impatiently for the release of this game. “Future Perfect” will have you going back in time with appropriate environments and weapons to correct mistakes; you’ll even be able to battle future versions of yourself.

“TimeSplitters” is a shooting game that will remind you of the N64’s “Goldeneye 007.” It’s fun without the gore of the other games in its genre. Better missions, guns, characters, and gameplay in “Future Perfect” make it a must have on my list.

Miss: “Donkey Kong Jungle Beat” for the Gamecube, available March 14.

This is a play off of “Donkey Konga.” You may think playing a video game with bongos sounds like a thrill, but “Donkey Konga” was one of the most dreadful games I’ve ever played. It was strictly children oriented and with no doubt, “Jungle Beat” will be aimed toward the same audience, much like all other Gamecube games.

Nintendo claims “Jungle Beat” will not be musical; rather you will be controlling Donkey Kong by use of the bongos, or a controller if you don’t have them, through many terrains. Afterwards, you fight huge bosses. The idea is absolutely insane. I don’t want to play a game by using bongos anymore than Donkey Kong wants to eat a rotten banana. I’ll be surprised at any sales for this game.

Miss: “Worms Forts: Under Siege!” for the Playstation 2, available March 1.

If you’ve played “Worms 3D,” you’ll know exactly what to expect in this next edition of “Worms.” This time you’ll get to control up to four forts of army worms. Collect resources and complete missions. Play against your friends and get bored. Been there, done that. I wouldn’t expect much from this game.

Other games to look for include “Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening,” “MVP Baseball 2005,” and “Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Chaos Theory.”

Games to pass over include “Fear Factor: Unleashed,” and “Sega Classics Collection.
