Dr. Victoria A. Hammer, Chairperson of the RWC Department of Office Information Technology, announced last week that the Department will offer three new options to the Administrative Management Technology Associate Degree program this autumn. The options will allow students to focus their degree on either Meeting/Event Planning, Virtual Assisting, or Software Specialist. In addition, there will be a new professional certificate for Bachelor’s degree holders in Meeting/Event Planning and a new one-year certificate in Virtual Assisting.
The Meeting/Events Planner program is designed to prepare students to plan, organize, and manage all aspects of corporate and/or organizational meetings and events, Hammer said. Required courses are designed to provide students with essential skills in computer applications, management, and communications.
This program includes an optional paid-internship component to give students on-the-job training related to coursework. Students in the program will attend classes on a full-time basis and work in a meeting/events planning related position for 20 hours a week for one year. According to Hammer, through this program, students will learn the fundamentals in class, while gaining necessary real-world work experience. Qualified meeting/events planners are employed by corporations, hospitals, hotels, non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, and various industries, Hammer said.
The Virtual Assisting program is designed to prepare students for the fast-growing virtual assistant career area. The International Virtual Assistants Association states that “A virtual assistant (VA) is an independent entrepreneur providing administrative, creative, and/or technical services. Utilizing advanced technological modes of communication and data delivery, a professional VA assists clients in his/her own office on a contractual basis.” Virtual Assisting is one of the fastest growing home-based businesses.
The Software Specialist program is designed to prepare students for the fast-growing software specialist, office support, and customer service career areas. This program also includes an optional paid-internship component to give students on-the-job training related to coursework. Students in the program will attend classes on a full-time basis and work in a software specialist position for 20 hours a week for one year.
Through this program, students learn the fundamentals in class, while gaining necessary real-world work experience. Software specialists are employed by corporations, hospitals, non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, and various industries.
