“North Country” is based on the true story of Josey Aimes, who is played by academy award winner actress Charlize Theron. Aimes filed the country’s first successful sexual harassment class action suit in the late 70’s. Aimes, a single mother who returned to her hometown in Minnesota, only wanted to make a living and found a job in the iron mines that had been the main source of employment in town. She found an honest paying job but discovered that the men she was working with were uncomfortable working with women, therefore not showing them much respect. Eventually Aimes became a target for sexual harassment.
Josey Aimes became a center of a nationwide controversy when she filed for a sexual harassment lawsuit against the mine owners after she found out that many of her female co-workers refused to stand beside her.
