UC Symphony seeking members

Do you enjoy making new friends? Do you enjoy making or playing music? Do you currently play an instrument or have you played one in the past? If so, have you considered joining UC’s campus symphony orchestra (UCSO)? The UCSO is open to students from any of the campus colleges and of any major. Staff, faculty, and community members are also encouraged to join.

Currently almost all the University’s colleges are represented, such as the College of Engineering, DAAP, Arts and Sciences, Business, CCM, and Medicine.

According to an email from Richard Wang, President of UCSO, there are also four non-student members, including an academic adviser from DAAP, a researcher from CECH, a data manager and a neurologist from the College of Medicine. The non-student members do not include graduate students.

The UCSO officially formed in the fall of 2004 for the sole purpose of providing an outlet for those students not majoring in music to continue playing and enjoying music in an orchestral setting. According to Wang, the organization itself is still very young. Therefore, it is actively seeking new members, as some must leave because of co-op, study abroad, or other various conflicts.

For winter quarter, the rehearsal schedule coincides with the UC Bearcat Band schedule and will meet once a week on Wednesday nights in the Rockwern Band Center from 7-9:30 p.m. Weekly rehearsals begin January 4, 2006.

Membership in the UCSO does not require any fees or auditions. If you are interested and do not own your own instrument, you can rent one.

More information concerning concert schedule, personal experience, and repertoire can be found at the UCSO’s website at www.uc.edu/groups/orchestra. If interested in joining, simply email your name, instrument played, and relative contact information to orchestra@uc.edu.
