Apparently some RWC students erroneously believe that they must pay for the disability services available at RWC. It is unknown where these students are getting this information but one thing can be said: it’s definitely false. As part of an accredited university, RWC is not only required to have a department dedicated to the needs of the disabled, but these services must also be free of charge.
In 1995 the Disability Discrimination Act was passed in order to end the continuous discrimination against those who are disabled. In October 1999, adjustments were made that provided extra help for the disabled. Alterations were then enforced in which many places were required to change their physical features so that it would be more convenient for any person with a disability.
In places of employment or education, it became illegal to discriminate against the disabled. In other words, every person attending RWC must get equal and fair treatment. Additional costs for any disability service would not only be discriminatory but also unlawful. Students should not feel deprived of a right that is unquestionably theirs.
RWC is a very resourceful facility and is open to everyone, including any handicapped person. The Office of Disability Services, headed by John Kraimer, is willing to accommodate and help anybody who is in need of it without any extra expense. There is no additional cost, even if you are being provided more than one or two services at a time.
If you are in need of any of the services provided, it is important that they be taken advantage of. Whether it be an interpreter, a tutor or even a classroom note taker, the services provided by Disability Services will guarantee an equal education for those in need of it most.
Students with disabilities are urged to come and take part in the services they need to better themselves educationally. The Office of Disability Services is located in Muntz Hall, Room 112E.
