The RWC Library has a new window display, which it is hoping will generate interest in the upcoming National African American Read-In that RWC is sponsoring on Monday, February 6, in the Muntz Lobby. The window, which can be viewed outside the Library entrance, exhibits books aimed toward the African American Read-In and is the work of Helen Kegler, RWC Director of Multi-cultural Affairs and a committee member of the National African American Read-In.
The objective of the Read-In is to make literacy a more significant part of Black History Month for one and all by initiating read-ins in every community.
Beginning at 11:30 a.m., RWC Dean Dolores Straker will launch the event and will be followed by several prominent figures, currently including former Cincinnati Vice-Mayor, Minette Cooper, and Sheila Williams, author of “Dancing on the Edge of the Roof.” All will be reading short passages from books authored by African Americans.
Then from 12:00-1:30 p.m., students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to participate by reading passages from books written by African American authors. Following the reading, students will answer questions pertaining to African American culture and prizes will be awarded.
RWC, as a community leader, is working with local schools, churches, and other factions to encourage universal participation in the event. The library’s contribution to this read-in will continue to be on display until February 9, and will be followed with frequent displays intended to engage students in community happenings.
