RWC to mark Asian New Year with tsunami update

RWC will mark the beginning of the Asian New Year with a two-fold event involving a tsunami update and free Asian food on January 25. The next coming of the new moon marks the coming of a new year for those of Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese cultures. Keeping with the idea of new beginnings, the RWC community will welcome one of the founding members of the International Medical Health Organization (IMHO), Thau Thambi-Pillai, M.D. for a return visit.

Dr. Thambi-Pillai, a UC Medical Center Transplant Specialist and native to Sri Lanka, will return to RWC on January 25 at noon in the Muntz Hall Lobby to provide students and faculty with an update on the progress in both Sri Lanka and other parts of Southeast Asia damaged by the Tsunami over a year ago.

He will comment on how progress has affected the physical restoration in land, housing, businesses, and economic revitalization, in addition to the physical and emotional healing of the people as time and progress go on.

Members of the RWC community are also invited to celebrate the Asian New Year that same day, 11:30-1 p.m., in the Muntz Lobby with some Asian cuisine.

The event is co-sponsored by the RWC MultiCultural Affairs Office, the International Student Group, the Multicultural Council, and the Cultural Diversity Committee. For more information contact Helen Kegler in the MultiCultural Affairs Office, Muntz 125, or call 745 -5691.
