1 Month of 12

I think about Black History and what it means to me but I start to wonder what it might
mean to you.
Is it important?
Heritage is never a big deal until you can’t claim it, don’t have it, can’t trace it.
In grade school you learn that history is not history if it’s not in writing, it’s just a story.
However, go to college and get knowledge and find out that most of the things in writing
are just stories written down.
Perceptional truth or exceptional lies depending on how many people agree with it.
I think about Black History and what it means to me and I know that I don’t know much
about it.
What I do know much of is what many would argue is more important than my own
heritage;
I know your history.
I know that Columbus is known for his discovery,
George Washington chopped down a cherry tree,
Neil Armstrong went to the moon and aimed higher,
And Richard Nixon, simply put, was a liar.
I know your heritage.
I know that Fred Astair seemed to dance on air,
Mae West said things many women wouldn’t dare,
Henry Ford made the Model T,
And Howard Hughes went crazy.
I think about Black history and what it means to me and wonder what do I know about
my own history?
I know Garrett A. Morgan invented stop lights,
Martin Luther King fought for civil rights,
And Rosa Parks started fights ’cause she wouldn’t give up her seat on the bus.
I think about Black history and what it means to me and I realize I don’t know my own
heritage.
Is that important?
Well think about it. I have 1 month, 1 month of 12 to enlighten myself on the ones that
have fought and died for freedom in America without the glory of recognition.
1 month. 1 month of 12 to hear the stories of Emmett Till, Medgar Evers, and Benjamin
Banneker.
Just 1 month.
So I invite you to take this 1 month with me to broaden your view on American Heritage.
If 1 month proves to be too much, take 1 moment;
1 moment to think about where you would be without history, without heritage.
Take that moment and multiply it times your life.
Now, is it important?
Would 1 month of 12 be enough?
