Dr. Victoria Wulsin finished second to Paul Hackett in the 2005 special Democratic primary for the Second Congressional District, and this year, without Hackett in the race, she has high hopes of winning the primary and facing Jean Schmidt in the fall campaign. Dr. Wulsin, the daughter of a social worker and a teacher, grew up in East Cleveland. She attended Harvard University on a scholarship. She went to Case Western Reserve University for medical school and returned to Harvard for her doctorate in Public Health, allowing her to dedicate her life to public service. Moreover, in doing so, Dr. Wulsin has helped shape health policy at the local, national, and international levels.
Dr. Wulsin has titled her own campaign “Steering America Back on Course.” She has built a platform on fundamental principles, which define the residents of southwest Ohio. An example of these principles is financial responsibility or not taxing our grandchildren with the ever-increasing national debt. Still another example is a policy of national security that is based on reliable intelligence. This policy would work with a federal government that respects the privacy of its citizens.
How does Dr. Wulsin’s chosen platform affect the students here at RWC? The RWC community is diverse with students who are also parents. RWC has students who are on some sort of county, state, or federal assistance. There are U.S. Armed Forces members and veterans. In addition, with this diversity comes a wide range of concerns for themselves and for the future.
Dr. Wulsin is for a single-payer health care system or a universal health care system. She knows from first hand experience that many Americans do not have access to a doctor. Forty-five million Americans live without health insurance, despite working full-time.
The availability of jobs is always a concern for future graduates of RWC. Dr. Wulsin is dedicated to not only bringing jobs back to southwest Ohio but also to creating new ones.
