Severe weather tips for tornado season

With spring comes severe weather, and everyone needs to be safe, not only on campus, but at home as well. The first step in protecting yourself from severe weather is knowing when it’s going to strike next. At RWC there is a warning system, but what about when you are not at UC? An approach that is not so trustworthy is depending entirely upon Hamilton County’s warning siren network. The sirens are really only designed for outdoor warning and cannot be depended upon to wake you up indoors. The sirens are also subject to power failures (which are a very common thing during severe weather).

By now, as the reader, you are probably thinking, “Well then what can I do to protect myself after you made me paranoid and scared?” My answer is to stay alert with the current changes of weather.

According to http://www.tornadochaser.com/2000safety.htm, this can be done in several ways.

Some of the tips found at the website are to buy an NOAA radio with an audio alert from your county only. These radios can be found online on eBay for little as $5 and at Radio Shack from $10-$99.99.

Having a family emergency plan during a tornado is also a valuable tip for not only ensuring your own safety, but also your family’s safety.

There are many other helpful tips found on that site. I have only named a few. Just remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
