Drew Bowen is only in his first year at RWC, enrolled as an Electronic Media major, and already college life has started off with terrific success.Last quarter as a class assignment, Drew was asked to present a Powerpoint presentation with a minimum of ten slides telling a story. That’s what began “A Home for Buster,” written and photographed by Drew Bowen. What started out as a simple assignment for class became a huge accomplishment for Drew.
“A Home for Buster” tells the remarkable story of how Drew rescued a baby squirrel. One hot day in August, Drew heard whining in his back yard. There under a tree was a baby squirrel, maybe three inches long. The body wasn’t even covered with fur yet. Drew and his wife proceeded to care for this squirrel, nursing it back to health, and acting as parents to it. Buster (which they named him) soon became a family pet as well as a friend to neighbors. The story is told in a step by step process, illustrated by photographs that Drew took from the day they found him until the present.
The book was created with I-Life, a program for Mac computers designed to make the layouts of books. “They had wonderful designs and it was simple to use,” Drew explained. “Once you were done, you send the files to Apple and they print it out for you. I received my book in less than a week.”
From there, Drew took his book and pitched the idea to several publishing companies, two being Scholastic Publishing and Random House Publishing. Both were interested. All Drew needs to do now is decide who he wants to publish his book.
With one book under his belt, Drew has plans to write a second. The topic of this book is still undecided, but I’m sure it will be a success just like his first.
