Student Government: Reality Check

Last issue, I started this new opinion column by stating that my two cents aren’t worth any more than yours. I made this statement because I felt it important to note that our collective student apathy is costing us all money. My money isn’t worth more than yours. My time isn’t, either. Our student government cannot affect your money by themselves. This week and from here on out, you can find my column by looking for my new mantra: “Reality Check.”

The RWC Student Government was recently honored when Main Campus Student Senate fought to bring a meeting here–a fairly major undertaking. We had short notice, but we posted flyers up all over the school inviting you to come.

Thirty senators came to our campus on April 12. They came and made decisions that required them to spend more than ten times the amount of money on RWC students for their elections than they spent on students in Clifton. (Did you get your pizza?)

I’d like to thank our two faculty advisors who came to the meeting, and the one student who stuck it through until the very end. And I’d like to thank the Student Affairs Office for helping us get the room together and Student Life for having your guy there, as well. I’m sorry that no other students and none of the administrators stopped in to witness the level of commitment the UC Senators showed to Raymond Walters students.

A huge thank you as well to our RWC Senators/Executive Officers, President Aimee McLean and Vice-President Heather May, who fought to add an RWC Organization to the Senate Appropriations Bill, which provided $200 to student organizations willing to hand out voter cards. Congratulations to the American Red Cross Organization, which received that money as a result of Aimee and Heather’s involvement.

We may soon be fighting a new bill that was tabled during the Senate meeting the following week, which could end our ability to receive that type of funding from the Senate again in the future.

In the last issue, I told you about many of the things going on that directly affect you and the rest of RWC students and asked for your help. How many of you responded?

None.

If you figured someone else would do it, you were wrong. With each issue of the Activist, I’ll let you know how many of you have answered this call and tell you about some of the other things affecting you, too.

For example, here’s a good “Reality Check” for you: if you are a student who pays for tuition with a credit card, you may want to know that next year, you’ll be charged 2.5% of your tuition to make that payment online, and paying online will be your only choice. Oh, and no more Visa.

If you are one of the dozens who read my last article and thought about contacting us but didn’t get around to it, I commend you for your thought. This time, take action.
