As a part of the eMedia Department’s Electronic Media Survey course, students are required to do at least 20 hours of community service during the Fall Quarter. Though this is not new to the class, it is something different from other kinds of course work. Even though I had spent several years in college taking class after class, it wasn’t until I took Electronic Media Survey that I experienced something like this. I personally did my community service at Eastgate Health Care, which is a nursing home.
I think that my experience doing community service gave me a greater sense of accomplishment and made me feel better because I knew that I was helping the community. However, there are new students in the class right now who have just started their community service, and they look at things differently than I do.
One such student is Michael Sellers. Michael decided that he would stay within the eMedia Department to do his community service. He had this to say about having to do community service this quarter: “I was going to do it anyway to get my foot in the door with these people (the eMedia Department personnel).” Hopefully Michael will find as great a sense of accomplishment as I did, once he completes his community service for the Electronic Media Survey Class.
