The Multicultural Affairs Office is holding its annual “A Case For Hunger” campaign. The Office is looking for students and faculty to donate time and money to help the hungry in the Tri-state area. “According to the Hunger In America 2006 study, there were 161,000 unduplicated persons in the Tri-state area who experienced food insecurity and sought emergency food from Free store Food bank agencies last year,” said Helen Kegler, RWC Director of Multicultural Affairs.
“During the hunger study interviews, it was revealed that many of these people made choices that are unimaginable to most of us,” Kegler added. “Families reported having to choose between buying food and paying rent (40%), buying food and paying utility bills (44%), buying food and paying for medications (28%), and all three (20%).”
The goal of the campaign is to raise money to buy cases of nonperishable food to donate to the Free Store Food Bank in order to help with the growing need of food in the Tri-state area.
There will be the prize of a pizza party for the class and the office donating the most money for the greatest amount of cases.
All that students and faculty need to do to get involved is to get together with their class, academic department, or office and raise money between Oct. 30 and Nov. 3 and take donations to the Multicultural Affairs Office in Muntz 127. For more information on this, contact Helen Kegler at 745-5691.
