RWC loses one of its original founders

This past August 17, RWC lost a beloved long-time member of its community in Professor Bill Baughin, who passed away at the age of 78. Professor Baughin was personally recruited by eventual RWC Dean Ernest Muntz to help open the doors of the College in 1967. During his stay, he pushed for academic freedom for professors and was a prominent member of American Association of University Professors.

His favorite course to teach was “American Issues and Problems,” which perennially looked at contemporary social and political issues from a historical perspective.

According to his colleague, friend, and longtime office-mate, Professor James Cebula, Professor Baughin was a firm believer that “viewing modern times from a historical angle was an essential part of democracy.”

Baughin was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, and received a degree in History while also studying French. He taught high school before coming to the University of Cincinnati where he earned his Ph.D. in History. After that, UC became his home as he had a short stint teaching at Main Campus before moving to RWC. Baughin is survived by his wife, RWC Foreign Language Professor Judith Baughin.
