Movies: “Party Monster” a great rental choice

When you get past the odd camera work with angled and very close up shots, “Party Monster” will give you a sense of what the club kids’ drug influenced fairyland was like when they ruled the club world. To tell you the truth, I never even heard of this movie or club kids, until I saw it for sale at Blockbuster for the very underappreciated price of $4.99. What caught my eye was the fact that the names Macaulay Culkin and Marilyn Manson were plastered on the front of the DVD.

Both the acting and costumes were over the top and beyond, but that was the whole point of the movie. Both living outrageous lives, Michael Alig and James St. James (who wrote the book this movie was based on) were portrayed as a couple of lost individuals searching for happiness in all the wrong places while collecting some others along the way.

The night, serving as their Neverneverland, was their escape from the world and its responsibilities. The glitter cannot hide the depressing undertone this movie projects, so don’t expect a feather light film. If you want a movie that hosts not only an odd cast of actors and costumes, but a fabulous soundtrack, then I would suggest you rent this film.
