Imagine hundreds of junior and senior high school students mixing chemicals, evaluating the effectiveness of launch gliders or manipulating robots through dexterity tests. It’s enough to make Bill Nye, the Science Guy, smile. On Saturday, March 3, students from more than 35 local school districts converged at RWC to compete in the regional Science Olympiad tournament. Some of the teams were from Ross, Finneytown, Wyoming, Lakota, Loveland, McAuley and numerous others that participated.
Similar to hotly contested athletic events, the Science Olympiad tests the academic mettle of student teams in more than 20 events. Ranging from anatomy to ecology, from food science to oceanography, students rotate through a series of timed experiments designed to test their problem-solving skills as well as their subject knowledge.
The events ran throughout the day beginning at 8 a.m. and ended in the late afternoon; the awards ceremony was held at Blue Ash Elementary School, which is located on RWC campus.
