The Imus affair: still a long way to go

It has been a while now since Don Imus has been fired from CBS radio, but before all of you put this story in your archives, I’d like to touch upon a few points. I honestly can tell you that I was offended by the comments made by Imus. Maybe it is just me, but I feel that those comments were not appropriate coming from a man in his position. This is a man who was heard by and very influential to many people.

As an African American male who wants to become a radio personality some day, I feel he should have had the maturity and decency to use a better choice of words if he wanted to just joke around.

If it was just joking around, I wonder if he would call his daughter a “nappy headed ho.”

I don’t know but my guess would be no.

It makes me somewhat mad that people try to excuse this man’s behavior by asking the question “Is it any different from rap Music?” It seems like everyone wants to focus on the “ho” part of the remark but wants to leave the “nappy headed” part out of the conversation.

To me, both sides of the comment were bad, but it seems as if no one wants to touch on the racist part of the comment made by him.

I feel sorry that the man got fired, but something had to be done. If we as Americans still have to talk about this in our culture today, then we have a long, long way to go.
