Books: A unique alien invasion in King’s “Dreamcatcher

“Dreamcatcher,” written by Stephen King in 2001 and put up on the big screen in 2003, is a movie that holds you captive, enthralled with the camera angles and pan work, but the book is an enthralling read, with its small details and the fluid story-telling of Mr. King.As a King reader, I was skeptical when I saw the cover, with the sun streaming through the trees and forest animals running throught the snow, but as I read, I became enthralled with the story of four boys who meet a boy named Duddits, who gives them strange powers.

As they grow into men, they grow apart, into their own lives, but they have a tradition of going camping every year, telling stories about their many mishaps and adventures with their dear friend Duddits.

One year, while on their annual camping trip, a man, running a fever, bloating horribly, and smelling, well, unique, stumbles upon their cabin. This gentleman talks of a light in the sky and not being able to find his friends.

Unknowingly, this man has just brought an alien life form into the cabin. The government declares quarantine on the area, stating that there is a virus that needs to be contained, when they are actually waiting for the ‘infected’ people to finish incubating the alien they are carrying inside of them, while killing all the other aliens they can find.

The fight against the aliens begins and ends between the covers of “Dreamcatcher,” enthralling the reader into hours of nonstop page flipping.
