What exactly is a Spring Fling?

Spring Fling is an event coordinated by the Student Life office in celebration of another school year coming to a close. Many students are looking forward to the summer break and a chance to relax their minds if not their bodies. This is one of the few campus events that really build a sense of community. Because RWC is strictly a commuter campus, we have few opportunities for the faculty, staff and students to come together and interact as a community.

Spring Fling, as well as Fall Carnival, gives the members of our campus an opportunity to step outside of our designated roles, come together, and enjoy the camaraderie in a more social and less academic setting. It also allows interested student organizations to participate in a college-wide event in order to showcase themselves and inform the community not only of their existence but also their impact on our campus and community.

It is a chance for students to see that there can be more to his or her RWC college experience than going to class, home and work. The live band is not simply entertainment; instead, entertainment and food help to relax and soften the tone of our campus and equalize all members of our community.

Again, it is about evoking the feeling of community within our college campus and enhancing the students’ connection to this campus and their experience here.

Spring Fling is always scheduled the week prior to Memorial Day weekend because the subsequent two weeks tend to be the last week of classes and exam week. Student Life intends for everyone to be able to come together, relax, and have a good time before the end-of-quarter and end-of-school-year crunch.

In previous years, when the Student Activities Committee (SAC) was an active student programming board, they determined the annual theme and communicated it to the participating student organizations as SAC served as the co-sponsor. Since the dissolution of SAC, due to lack of student participation in extra-curricular activities on our campus, Student Life has continued the Spring Fling tradition without student organization co-sponsorship for the good of the community of RWC.

With no SAC planned theme, the participating student organizations are currently free to express their individualities and exercise their creativities. Spring Fling is a tradition that adds even more depth to the rich education provided at Raymond Walters College.
