My World: RWC as a springboard

When I was in high school I screwed around with my classes. I never took them seriously because I never took my future seriously. When I first heard about college, my attitude was pretty much close to “What is that?” Many students like me are now at Raymond Walters College. Money issues, academic issues, or our parents made us go to college. Whatever it may be, we can all agree that college is much different from high school.

This is my second year at Raymond Walters College. I previously attended the University of Toledo, but decided to transfer. Everyday I see something new.

I’m like everyone else. I hate waking up early, and I hate trying to find a parking space for five minutes. We are all like vultures in the parking lot. But what I notice more is how many people really care about getting an education. I see the library flooded everyday. I see people in the hallways studying their material before the big test. And I see myself actually sitting down to study instead of doing something else.

Many of us, myself included, never thought we could change. But let’s face it. As we get older, we kind of have to change. I actually worry about a test that I have three weeks from now. In high school I wouldn’t have known about the test until the day of it.

Many of us work as well as go to school, so we’ve seen what it’s like out there. Most of us realize we need a college education to be successful later in life. And for those of you who don’t know it yet, you will soon enough.

Winter is approaching. And when Ohio feels like Russia during the winter, many of us will feel the drain and pull of going to school when it’s cold.

Recently I had a professor ask me and other students in the class to take college seriously. I thought about this for a while. She said the one thing many of us forget when we pull into the parking lot. I hate to break it to many, but Raymond Walters College isn’t a party school. It’s a springboard school to a four-year university. But who said you shouldn’t take the springboard seriously? I know Greg Louganis took the springboard seriously.

So remember, we don’t have recess, unless you consider your mid-class cigarette recess. And if that’s the case, then three fourths of the student body has recess.

Just try to remember that if you’re feeling the stress of college life, you are not alone.
