Republican presidential race wide open

The Republican presidential candidate race remains close. With no clear front runner, it’s still anyone’s game. The South Carolina primary on January 19 brought a significant, but narrow victory to Arizona Senator John McCain, who captured 33% of the vote over Mike Huckabee’s 30%. The former Arkansas governor’s sole win lies in the Iowa caucus, while McCain also claimed New Hampshire.

Mitt Romney, on the other hand, holds on to a strong campaign with three victories. The former Massachusettes governor won in Wyoming, Michigan, and, most recently, Nevada.

With yet still no victories in the primary season, former New York City mayor, Rudy Giuliani, and former Tennessee senator and actor, Fred Thompson also remain in the race. After poor finishes in various primaries, Thompson’s candidacy appears to be in doubt, while Giuliani’s fate seems to depend on the upcoming Florida primary, where he has focused most of his attention.

The race is sure to narrow and clarify in the coming weeks, which will bring not only the Florida (January 29) and Maine (Feb 1) primaries, but Super Tuesday (February 5), where we will see the results of 21 Republican contests. Ohioans don’t head to the polls until March 4.
