RWC celebrates Asian New Year

RWC celebrated the Asian New Year early last week, with activities in the Muntz Lobby on Tuesday, January 23. The focus this year was on the Chinese New Year. “The Chinese New Year is a joyful celebration that brings families and people together, especially through the food” explains Xiaohua Hu, Visiting Professor from China, currently teaching English at RWC.

One traditional and very popular New Year’s food served in China is the Jiaozi Dumpling. Shaorong Huang, Associate Professor of English and Communications, his wife, Jinfeng Ma, and Xiaohua Hu, combined their culinary skills to demonstrate firsthand to the college community how these dumplings are made in China.

Members of the RWC International Student Group helped them serve samples of the Jiaozi Dumpling along with authentic Chinese tea.

Professor Huang also shared a DVD of an actual Chinese New Year Celebration gala shown on China’s CCTV on Chinese New Year’s Eve, 2007.

The actual Chinese New Year is Feb. 7 this year.
