A plastic baby baked into a cake, authentic New Orleans music, and brightly colored purple, green, and gold decorations can only mean one thing. Mardi Gras! On Tuesday February 5, the RWC Student Life Office sponsored a Mardi Gras Commemoration for daytime and evening students. As students crowded the tables, they enjoyed music, Mardi Gras trivia games, novelty prizes, and one thing students truly enjoy–free food. As the event progressed throughout the early afternoon, the Student Life staff served the King Cake and reminded students not to eat the baby. Most students had puzzled looks on their faces and then asked, “There’s a baby in this cake?” A plastic baby is placed inside the cake and the person who finds the baby is said to have good luck and become king for the next year.
But instead of crowning someone king of Raymond Walters, the winner received a special prize. “I never find the baby,” Samantha Goldsberry said just seconds before she actually did. The second student to find the baby was Kathleen Putman.
Other students had fun playing Mardi Gras trivia games and getting Mardi Gras beads. To get Mardi Gras beads, students had to flash their Student I.D. (which is much less than what people have to flash in New Orleans!)
By the way, if you don’t have a student I.D., you can get one by taking a copy of your schedule with your “M” number and a picture I.D. to the RWC Security Office in Muntz 134 (just past the Bookstore to the right).
If you need to replace your I.D., you must go to the Student Life Office (Muntz 127) and pay a fee of $15. Keep your receipt and take it to the Security office, and you will be able get a replacement I.D.
